Grand Marais Music & Arts Festival and Munising Bay Cruisers’ Classic Car Show Celebrate Anniversaries

Two larger Alger County events are celebrating anniversaries this year as the Grand Marais Music and Arts Festival turns 40 and the Munising Bay Cruisers’ Classic Car Show marks 10 years.

Taking place Aug. 11-13, the Grand Marais Music and Arts Festival will be jam packed with music, crafts, food and fun. Located at the eastern end of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior, the historic village of Grand Marais boasts natural beauty, a quant downtown full of character, shops, museums and food options.

Kicking off the festival with a free event on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 8 p.m. will be a performance by Negaunee-based band Iron Daisy, which plays hits from all genres and eras. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The festival is hosted by the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce and is held behind the Grand Marais Community Center at E21733 Braziel St. Weekend tickets – which are required for admission to the festival on Friday and Saturday -will be available at the gate. Turning 10 this year is the Munising Bay Cruisers Classic Car Show, which is slated to take place on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spectators will get to view over 100 classic cars at this free event that takes place near the roundabout in Munising. There’ll be a variety of vendors at the show, along with merchandise available.

Munising Bay Cruisers will kick off the event a day prior with its annual “Friday Cruise to Grand Marais.” According to the MBC’s website: “Leaving from City Park Drive in Munising at 1 p.m. sharp, cruising along Hurricane Highway (aka H-58) with its 48 scenic miles and 158 curves to historic Grand Marais, MI for a block party (for the cruisers).”

Another event outdoor adventurers should keep on their radar is the Mountain Goat Mash, a mountain bike race which takes place on Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Valley Spur Trailhead in Munising.
